Nothing Jay Cutler can do or say can make the public opinion on him change. He could throw 4 touchdowns with a broken leg in the driving snow to take the Bears to the Super Bowl and he will still be seen as a whiny piece of shit. Is it true? Arguably. Is it fair? No. Has he brought it on himself? Yes.
Public perception is everything in this world. What you are labeled as sticks with you. Even when it isn’t true. How something or someone is perceived is often times more important than the truth. Be that job killing ObamaCare-not true. Right wing media caused Gabby Giffords shooting-not true, murders in Little Rock, the Holocaust Museum, and churches in Missouri and Tennessee yes, but not Giffords. George W Bush a moron-no. There are many from the world of sports I could use but won’t.
To make it local, consider David Pickler and Tom Guleff. Both of these men want what they think is best for the part of Memphis that doesn’t include Shelby County. In their view, Shelby County should be separate from Memphis. Even though this is not in their minds (or at least I hope so) a racial issue, it comes off as so due to non-Memphis Shelby being whiter. This perception has become the reality in most people’s minds. I think they are simply misguided and choose to ignore the tide of history and the reality of the situation that the government that they have is not sustainable, does not grow anything, and is misguided. Because many see this as well, they think it could be racial. I hope not, I believe not. Am I being naive?

One of my all time favorite movies is Diggstown. Quick plot synopsis, a con man played by James Woods sets up a bet with the big man of a town played by Bruce Dern. The main focus of this con involves a boxer played by Louis Gossett Jr fighting 10 men in a 24 hour period. In setting up the rules for the fight, Woods is arguing for a day to be 24 hours so that he can have half of the fights just after midnight, and the other half sometime that evening. Dern is countering with an arguing that the county that Diggstown is in should be included in the bet of “any 10 Diggstown men”. Woods and Dern concede to each other on this. There’s more to this, but I don’t want to give any spoilers.
Every time I hear the opponents to consolidation, especially the ones who say that Memphis is not Shelby County, I get pissed off. Just like Diggstown is Olivier County, Memphis IS Shelby County. Memphis doesn’t really need Shelby County’s suburbs. What do they really provide to Memphis other than provide a place for retail companies to continually flee further and further out to? Not much. Shelby County needs Memphis a hell of a lot more than Memphis needs Shelby County. Its time for the ostrich like mayors of the Shelby municipalities, the SCDP (really? you will lose nothing outside of patronage jobs…oh yeah, not I get it), Tom Guleff and the other anti activists to get this through their head. Consolidation is needed and required and the power should be shared, not weighted towards the smaller towns or the city. If we don’t do this, this county and the area are going to hang seperately, we do consolidation, we can succeed in ways that we can’t imagine.

You say you won’t vote for Pelosi for Speaker if elected. First putting aside my belief that you aren’t winning this election, this is a stand for nothing. Jr did the same thing in 2004 and voted for himself instead of Pelosi in the House elections that year. What did it mean?
Nothing. She wasn’t going to win Speaker that year as we were still in the minority. This is not the same as the uprising that kicked Gingrich out. Yes, there are candidates that aren’t saying they are Democrats on the campaign trail. They aren’t saying anything yet.
But it is curious how desperate Roy is to win that he is doing something you would expect a veteran law maker such as him not to do to realize that you don’t piss off your leadership. This will make his bills toxic. Way to go Roy.
