Fred Smith has waaaaaay too much power.

Or at least his son does.  First, go read this article by Geoff Calkins.

Done? Disagree?

If you do, you are an idiot. Jerry Gray may be a deserving candidate. He probably is, but he has no collegiate experience and will get the job because Fred Smith is trying to get his sons jobs, one as an assistant coach and the other as the starting QB. Now, Cannon has a good shot at being the starting QB, but if his brother is on the staff that will create a divided as hell locker room and will hurt him with perception by his teammates. Arthur will be ignored because when published reports in the interview process say you got the job strictly because of your dad’s connection to Gray, well…….

Porter is qualified having been a national recognized recruiter and by all indications is not the next Ed Orgeron. He is hungry, connected to the area, and would show a decided commitment by the University to its alumni, a connection and commitment that frankly has been sorely lacking in past decades.

The final reason is age in my mind. Yes, Jerry Gray is a former Pro Bowler who retired before any recruit he has was born. Plus, he wasn’t a big name guy. Gray is not a young man, being what, 50?  College football, especially for first time head coaches is a young man’s game.  Porter is 38 and hungry.

Update-I started this in the morning of 11-28, had to quit due to work, and as I go back to finish it, discover that Jerry Gray has pulled out of the running for the position.  Good, but that doesnt change my beliefs though.
